The King’s Speech wins big at lackluster Academy Awards

The 83rd Academy Awards presented by younger and hipper hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway was an experiment not to be repeated. This was a case of choosing celebrity over qualified and seasoned hosts. There’s a reason why audiences love experienced hosts to present the biggest award ceremony on the planet, they’re funny and they can whoop up a crowd. Three hours is a long time to keep an audience energized and interested.

Franco, don’t give up your day job, stick to acting for now because you just aren’t experienced enough for this. Sorry to say I told you so but what were the Academy thinking? This is not Franco’s fault. How could he turn down such an offer. But why ask a young actor to take on such a big show? If this was stage, Franco would have been booed off and the production would close on opening night.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The Academy needs to stick to professional hosts and comics. And did I mention the chemistry between Franco and Hathaway? If you saw any of the clips put out by the Academy over the last few weeks you’d know the two together were like wet fish and about as funny as an earthquake. We don’t watch the Academy Awards to think that we the audience can do a better job. We watch it to see the best hosts and presenters the entertainment industry has to offer.

Franco failed because he made this about him. He said before the show that he didn’t care if he bombed. A professional host and stage performer is all about the audience -the audience is number one and giving them a good time is paramount. Actor Hugh Jackman understood this.

Let’s hope the Academy hires Ricky Gervais to do the job properly next year.

The Academy Awards honor Francis Ford Coppola

Last night at the Governor’s Awards in Los Angeles, the Academy honored director Francis Ford Coppola and actor Eli Wallach with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Guests at the ceremony were two-time Oscar winner Robert DeNiro, Oscar nominee James Caan and Oscar winning director Sofia Coppola.

Jean-Luc Godard to miss Governors Awards

“A Bout de Souffle” 1960

French auteur Jean-Luc Godard will not attend the Governors Awards as rumored. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are honoring the acclaimed director along with Francis Ford Coppola, Eli Wallach and Kevin Brownlow. The special dinner ceremony will pay tribute to Godard through film clips and interviews with his many admirers. The Oscar statuette will be sent to his home in Switzerland.
