Located in southwestern Spain in the province of Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera is famous for its flamenco, sherry and dancing horses. Situated 9 miles inland from the sea between Sevilla and Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera is the principal of 3 sherry towns that between them produce most of the sherry for the rest of the world. British merchants have been involved with the sherry trade here for centuries and the famous names of the bodegas, such as Harvey, Sandeman, Domecq and Byass, are worth a trip and a tasting or two. Jerez’s spectacular dancing horses can be seen at the world famous Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art, Real Escuela Andaluza de Arte Equestre and the Avenida de Abrantes. The long-standing and extraordinary art of flamenco can be seen at the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco in the Palacio de Penmartin. Other main attractions are the 12th century Alcazar, the ‘Camera Oscura” lodged at the top of the Alcazar, the Domecq clock tower, the 18th century Baroque style Cathedral and the 15th century La Cartuja monastery.
