Italy’s city of Viareggio is one of the best bathing resorts on the Tuscan coast and boasts 10 km of beaches with more than 100 bathing establishments. The Apuan Alps and the Massaciuccoli Lake surround the town. There are beautiful pinewoods, a picturesque harbour and a 3 km long promenade lined with shops, cinemas and a theatre. Not to be missed is one of Italy’s most famous events, the Carnival of Viareggio with its masked procession and parade of giant paper-marche figures. The town is also a must for art lovers with many theatres, museums, galleries and fine architecture on display, including Liberty-style buildings, the Puccini’s villa and the Carrara marbles.
