“The Artist” pulled no surprises Sunday tonight in wining three Golden Globes, including best actor for Jean Dujardin, best comedy or musical and best original score for Ludovic Bource.

Ricky Gervais presented the awards for the third year running and managed to take a swipe at everyone in earshot, including the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Other major awards from the HFPA went to “The Descendants” for best drama with George Clooney winning best drama actor. Meryl Streep bagged her eighth Golden Globe, winning best drama actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” and Michelle Williams won for musical and comedy actress in “My Week With Marilyn.”

Big gun directors were winners tonight with Steven Spielberg winning best animated feature for the “Adventures of Tintin,” Martin Scorsese for “Hugo” and Woody Allen for best screenplay for “Midnight in Paris.”

In supporting roles, Christopher Plumber won his first Golden Globe for  “Beginners” and Octavia Spencer for “The Help.”

Other film awards went to “The Separation” for best foreign language film and Madonna for best original song for “W.E.’s” “Masterpiece.”

In television, “Downton Abbey,” “Modern Family” and “Homeland” went home with gold. Best acting trophies went to Claire Danes for “Homeland,” Matt LeBlanc for “Episodes,” Laura Dern for “Enlightened,” Idris Elba for “Luther,” Jessica Lange for “American Horror Story,” Peter Dinklage for “Game of Thrones” and Kate Winslet for “Mildred Pierce.”

The 69th Golden Globe awards is less than a week away in it’s new January time slot. Ricky Gervais is hosting again this year and is certainly one of the best reasons to watch the ceremony.

Ansel Adams Los Angeles

drkrm is pleased to present Ansel Adams Los Angeles, rarely seen photographs that reveal the lost landscape and lifestyle of a prewar Los Angeles. These nostalgic images represent Ansel Adams as a photojournalist on assignment for Fortune Magazine in 1939. Ansel Adams Los Angeles will be on display from February 18 through March 17, 2012.

In 1939 Los Angeles had a population of 1.5 million. The cost of gas was 10 cents and a new car was $700. It was the year The Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind were released. Francis Ford Coppola, Ralph Lauren and Lee Harvey Oswald were born. Amelia Earhart was officially pronounced dead and President Roosevelt initiated the Manhattan Project. The U.S. began rearming for World War II and the prestigious Ansel Adams was commissioned by Fortune Magazine to photograph a series of images for an article covering the aviation industry in the Los Angeles area. For the project, Adams took over 200 black & white photographs showing everyday life, businesses, street scenes and a variety of other subjects. But when the article, City of the Angels, appeared in the March 1941 issue, only a few of the images were included.

In the early 1960s Adams rediscovered the photographs among papers at his home in Carmel and donated them to the Los Angeles Public Library. He wrote in a letter: “The weather was bad over a rather long period and none of the pictures were very good… I would imagine that they represent about $100.00 minimum value… At any event, I do not want them back.” But as many critics will agree, sometimes an artist is not always the best judge of their own work.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) created some of the most influential photographs ever made; he was one of this century’s leading exponents of environmental values. It seems that every third family in America has an Adams’ poster on the wall, images that were difficult to make but easy to love. His images portray a romanticized and unspoiled Western American landscape, but Ansel Adams Los Angeles is a whole other body of work that is rarely discussed, let alone seen.

drkrm, in association with EVFA, and with the cooperation of the Los Angeles Public Library, will create and exhibit new silver-gelatin prints made from the original negatives. These dramatic black and white limited-edition photographs, on display to the public for the first time, will be offered for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the LAPL.

Ansel Adams Los Angeles is part of Pacific Standard Time. Pacific Standard Time is an unprecedented collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. Initiated through grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time will take place for six months beginning October 2011.

Kickstart Fundraiser

On Oct 1, 2011 a few award-winning filmmakers in NY teamed up to make a collaborative film about the Occupy Wall Street Movement.  They called and wrote to their filmmaker friends, and they to theirs.  Soon, there were over 60 people across the country who had come together to join the collaborative film.

It started with a few filmmakers in NY, but within a couple weeks people were joining in Denver, Portland, LA, Boston, Seattle, Philly, DC, Kansas City, Miami, Pittsburgh, Austin, Dallas, Rhode Island, Nashville, Chicago, San Francisco, Oakland, in short: it took off all over the country.  Skilled editors got onboard, PR people, producers, post production supervisors, a supervising editor signed on, post production services were donated by Metropolis Post, Duotone contributed library music, and everyone started pitching in what they could. As more and more people joined the project, people started helping each other with their shoots, with equipment and contacts.  This film had taken off; the experimental process was working!

The thing all the contributors share is a desire to make a compelling, cohesive and honest film; a film that documents the movement from many perspectives, from many angles, from many cities and towns, and that joins these many voices into a singular and unique portrait.  Guided by award-winning filmmakers and editors, this exciting, independent collaborative film needs your help to make it a reality.

With a feature documentary film, there would normally be many months of pre-production and fundraising. Because of the spontaneity and urgency of this movement, we did not have that. We jumped into this because we felt a need to do so and now we are donating our time and energy while covering expenses ourselves. But that can only go so far.

$17,500 is our immediate goal.  It’s the amount we need to buy the hard drive storage and editing space that will allow us to begin the massive process of sorting and editing.  This will get us to the point that we can, at the very least, put together a promo reel to bring in additional funding.

Kickstarter is an all-or nothing crowd-funding platform.  Either we hit our goal, receive the funding and send out all the rewards, or, if we fall even one dollar short of our goal, your card isn’t charged and we get nothing.

Support so far has been tremendous.  We’ve already got post production services donated by Metropolis Post (guaranteeing that this film will be completed), library music donated by Duotone, and close to 100 people around the country are donating skills and service, work, time and maybe even a little bit of love.  We just need to get enough funding together right now to get our storage needs covered, and to start the process of sorting and editing footage.
